Mastering Physics Solutions: Exercise 22.37

Exercise 22.37

Part A = 26 degrees Click to use the calculator/solver for this part of the problem
Part B = 1.81 * 10^8 m/s
Part C = 331 nm

Solutions Below:

Yellow-green light of wavelength 550 nm in air is incident on the surface of a flat piece of flint glass at an angle of 46°.

Part A

What is the angle of refraction of the light?
Express your answer as an integer.

Just use Snell’s law. The refractive index for flint glass is about 1.66.

n1 * sin(θ1) = n2 * sin(θ2)
1 * sin(46) = 1.66 * sin(θ2)
0.71934 / 1.66 = sin(θ2)
0.4333 = sin(θ2)
θ2 = 26 degrees

26 degrees

Part B

What is the speed of the light in the glass?
Express your answer using three significant figures.

Just divide the speed of light in air by the refractive index of flint glass (about 1.66):

(3.00 * 10^8) / 1.66

= 1.81 * 10^8 m/s

1.81 * 10^8 m/s

Part C

What is the wavelength of the light in the glass?
Express your answer using three significant figures.

Just divide the wavelength of the light in air by the refractive index of flint glass (about 1.66):

550 / 1.66

= 331 nm

331 nm
